LAWRENCEBURG CHEVROLET SPRINTS
Bobby East wins first Sprint feature on Dirt!
Bobby East was all smiles in victory lane after winning for the first time in a sprint car on dirt. East better known as a pavement driver in USAC midgets and sprints, found a way around early leader Shawn Westerfeld and hung on for his first victory in a sprint car at Lawrenceburg. 26 Lawrenceburg Chevrolet Sprint Cars were on hand, many of them trying to solidify a good point’s finish with just 2 point nights remaining. The race for the championship has pretty much come down to two drivers, Andrew Elson and John Memmer. Elson held an 85 point lead entering Saturday night. When the 25 lap feature began, Lawrenceburg regulars, Shawn Westerfeld and Chad Boespflug took the green from the front row. Westerfeld would take the lead, and pull away for the first several laps. Things would go well for Westefeld until he would close in on the back half of the field on lap 8. Westefeld had some trouble trying to figure out a way around the slower cars, and this allowed Both Hunter Schuerenberg, and Bobby East to close in on Westerfled and do so rather quickly. The 3 raced hard for a few laps until East was able to clear both Scherenberg and Westerfeld and assume the lead. With the caution coming out, for a flip involving Brett Burdette, the field would be slowed behind leader East. This would allow the leaders to race the rest of the 25 lap without too much trouble negotiating lapped traffic. East would lead the remaining laps to take the checkered flag. Following East across the line were Westerfeld, Schuerenberg, Coleman Gulick, and Brady Short. Heat race winners were JJ Hughes, Bobby East, and Shawn Westerfeld. Brady Short won the B Main. As for the championship battle, both Elson and Memmer would race in the top ten until Memmer’s car quit on the white flag relegating him to a 15th place finish. With Elson finishing in 6th, he will enter the last points race with a 125 point lead over John Memmer. A champion will be crowned on Saturday, September 18th, when the Lawrenceburg Chevrolet Sprint Cars return to the track for the final time in 2010.

Gilpin finally wins at Lawrenceburg!
Devin Gilpin has won at just about every track he has raced at. He has run well and even led at Lawrenceburg. Unfortunately for Gilpin, he has been unable to secure good finishes or win because of bad luck. This night would be different for Gilpin. When the green flag flew, Greg Amick would get around Gilpin and lead the first seven laps. With Modified standout, John Demoss also in the mix, the top 3 would race 3 wide and sided by side for a few laps with Gilpin able to wrestle the lead away from Amick on the high side. Amick was continuing to run around the bottom of the race track with Gilpin running the high side. Demoss was not able to make a move around Gilpin because his car was running the exact same line as Gilpin’s. Gilpin was able to pull away from Amick and bring Demoss with him to second. The 2 would pull away from the rest of field. Demoss would never seriously challenge Gilpin and Gilpin would lead for the final 13 laps en route to his 1st win at Lawrenceburg and his 20th feature win of 2010. Demoss was second, followed by Amick, Rick Bingham who started 17th, and Weasel Rhodes. Heat race winners were Dave Jamison, Greg Amick, Richie Lex, Pete Holt, and Scotty Kincaid. The B main winners were Jeff Harris and Rick Bingham. Brad Weick has clinched the 2010 Budweiser UMP modified track championship at Lawrenceburg. The final race of the season for the modifieds will be on Saturday September 18th.

Mark Bruce wins again and takes over point lead.
It wasn’t without drama, but Mark Bruce was able to win the feature and take sole possession of the point lead over Scott Hensley on Saturday night at Lawrenceburg. Entering the night, Hensley and Bruce were tied in points. Bruce won his heat race with Hensley finishing right behind him, so he would have a 5 point advantage at the drop of the green flag of the feature. The Ohio Valley Screenprinters Purestocks are always exciting races and with the points battle coming down to the end, this race was no different. Hensley would lead lap 1, but Bruce would go around him on the high side and take the lead away on lap 2. Matt Wheeler and Will McRoberts would join the battle as well. Things would be smooth for Bruce until something started to go wrong with the engine in his car. While still leading, the engine began knocking and missing so loud you could hear it above all the other cars on the track. Bruce’s car was definitely slowing down, but he was just fast enough to keep everyone behind him. Following a caution, Bruce’s motor stopped missing, and he would have just enough to hold on for the feature win. Bruce later discovered his motor was running on 7 cylinders at the end. Hensley would finish second followed by McRoberts, Wheeler, and Ken Upchurch. Heading into the final points race of the season on Saturday September 18th, Bruce holds a 15 point lead over Hensley.
